We were on our way to San Miguel, Ciudad Barrios. This is the hottest areas in El Salvador and teams from US and Canada never do ministry in this area. The Experience Church is one of the few teams that go there and we’re the only church to come back two years in a row and we are thankful that relationships have been built. We arrived in this city and stayed in the pastors home. The pastor and his family was such a beautiful picture of Jesus! The way they loved us and gave their lives away was amazing! Praise God! The pastor’s wife was one person I admired a lot. There were nights I stayed up until 2AM and would see her hand wash our shirts. There were days I would wake up at 4AM and see her in the kitchen making breakfast for our team. She did not sleep!! She along with her family loved us so well and I will forever be grateful for them!
Monday, March 9
This was our first day of ministry. Ministry reminded me a lot of Young Life Club. In Young Life we sing songs, play games, give away prizes and talk about Jesus. The ministry work we did in El Salvador was very similar except they didn’t sing songs… they danced!! I had a blast dancing all week in front of so many kids!!
We went to our first school to do our first program and I was immediately discouraged. I couldn’t communicate to the kids and I started to doubt. As soon as I became worried, a kid named Carlos came to me and started speaking Spanish. I asked one of the National Staff to translate and the kids said: “Thank you for coming to my school and dancing. It was fun!” I smiled and Carlos hugged my leg and wouldn’t let go! The National Staff member, looked at me and said “hug him!” From that point, my doubts and worries went away and I knew I was here to love on these kids, to embrace them because most of them have not felt a hugs or touch that wasn’t abusive. I also knew and believed that God was going to take care of me all week! Monday through Friday we did 4-6 programs a day and it was so much fun!
